今日は、ネイティブの方のブログを読んでいて気になる単語が出てきたので紹介します。試験が終わって、とっておきのBen&Jerryのアイスクリームを食べようとした時の日記です。

It is hard to scoop them out of the pint because of their size. I had to let the ice cream "defrost" a little bit in order to scoop them out and to not bend my spoon. But they are very chocolaty and they have the taste of espresso. I liked that the espresso flavor wasn't very overwhelming and it does not override the actual chocolate. The chunks are not soggy or melted and they have a nice crunch to them.

簡単な単語なのに、今まで一度も使ったことがなかったdefrost。「解凍する」だとネイティブはthawのほうをよく使うようですが、両者には違いがあります。thawは「冷凍食品」を解凍するときに使い、defrostは「冷凍保存していたもの」を解凍するときに使うようです。

昔、NHKの語学番組で栗原はるみさんが出演しているものがありました。彼女が英語で説明しながらお料理したり、外国人と一緒に和食を食べたり温泉に行ったりするという内容でした。自分が興味のある分野で英語が使えるようになると、世界がぐっと広がりそうですね。
